Cranberry may expand ordinance on sidewalks

CRANBERRY TWP — Township officials are considering expanding an ordinance that requires developers to pay for sidewalks and other road improvements.

The supervisors will hold a public hearing on Sept. 29 for a proposed amendment to the streetscape enhancement overlay district section of the zoning code.

The ordinance currently requires companies developing properties on certain roads to include amenities such as sidewalks, trees, lights, street walls, pedestrian pockets, benches, trash cans or bike racks.

It applies to all of Route 19 and Route 228 in the township and portions of Rochester Road, Rowan Road, Franklin Road and Freedom Road.

The amendment would add numerous portions of roads in an effort to improve pedestrian connectivity, said Ron Henshaw, Cranberry’s director of planning and development services.

The new roads would include Glen Eden Road, North Boundary Road, Cranberry Square Drive, Dutilh Road, Executive Drive and Ogle View Road.

Township solicitor Russ Lucas said that if the supervisors approve the change, it will not retroactively affect property owners.

Only development or redevelopment projects dealing with at least 15,000 square feet will be subject to the requirements.
