Lions Club, baseball players team up to help blind woman

Bill Hetrick, a member of the Butler Lions Club, and three youth baseball players perform yard work at a Butler home Thursday.

Four Butler Lions Club members and three members of a Butler Baseball Association 14- and 15-year-old team the club sponsors did yard work on Thursday for Sharon Chernick at 412 N. Jackson St.

Chernick is considered legally blind, and the Butler Lions Club, which founded the Blind Association, is glad to help her out.

“We’re kind of referred to as the knights of the Blind Association,” said John Houston, president of the club. “We meet there, we work really close with them.”

The club has sponsored a Butler Baseball Association team for three years.

“We decided we’d give those kids an opportunity to serve,” Houston said. “They have a manager that has been very responsive. He’s been able to get those kids to some of our functions.”
