Butler bats quelled

Chillicothe slows down BlueSox, ends win streak

Chillicothe never did land a decisive uppercut Sunday afternoon.

But the Paints upended the Butler BlueSox with a series of effective jabs, scoring a single run in six different innings of a 6-1 Prospect League baseball win at Kelly Automotive Park.

After winning five straight games, Butler (10-7) has now dropped two straight. The Sox tallied just a pair of runs on four hits in Saturday’s 6-2 loss to the Paints.

“We didn’t seem to have any energy offensively the last two games,” said Butler manager Jason Radwan after Sunday’s defeat. “We were flat. I don’t know if we’re still dragging after the road trip (four straight road games), but I know we’re a better hitting team than we showed the last couple of days.”

Butler starter John Schreiber took the loss after tossing five innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits.

The Paints grabbed an early edge with a run in the top of the first, loading the bases with no outs. Stewart Nelson scored when Dylan Jones grounded into a 4-6-3 double play.

Schreiber worked two scoreless frames in the second and third before Chillicothe added another run in the fourth.

Jones led off with a double on a ball hit to center field. A stiff wind, which was present virtually the entire game, kept Tyler Niemann from making the catch and Jones pulled up at second base. Jesse Forestell then singled off second baseman Tyler Sullivan’s glove, allowing Jones to reach third base and he scored on Eli Boggess’ groundout.

Schreiber’s outing was an up-and-down effort. He struck out six, but also walked five.

“He has good stuff and he was fine as long as he was able to get ahead in the count and use all of his pitches,” said Radwan.

Butler scored in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Dalton Hoiles singled and raced home on Dillon Sunnafrank’s triple to left-center.

It was the only run given up by Chillicothe starter Tanner Allison, who earned the win after allowing five hits in five innings.

Allison is the reigning Prospect League Pitcher of the Year after going 8-0 with a 1.07 ERA in 2015. He pitches collegiately at Western Michigan.

“We just got him on Thursday because Western Michigan made the (NCAA) playoffs,” said Paints’ manager Brian Bigam. “He throws the ball really well and it’s good to have him back.”

The Paints (6-9) added runs in the fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth. But they all proved to be insurance tallies as Chillicothe reliever David Current shut out the BlueSox in his four innings of work, which featured four strikeouts and no walks.

Current stranded the only two baserunners he allowed — a bunt single by Garret Vrbanic in the seventh and a base hit from Sunnafrank in the ninth.

“It all comes down to pitch count,” said Bigam. “If he’s cruising along and keeping his pitch count down, we’ll leave him out there. We were fortunate that he was getting a lot of quick outs.”

Butler relievers Jack Herzing (one inning), Zach Patterson (two) and Kyle Zurak (one) each gave up one run. Only the run allowed by Patterson was earned.

In Saturday’s game, the Paints plated four first-inning runs against Sox starter Shawn Holman. Vrbanic had both runs batted in and two of Butler’s four hits, including a double.

Butler is off today and will play at Champion City Tuesday.
