Events add sparkle to season

Here are some of the community events to celebrate Christmas in the Butler County area.

Butler library hosts holiday eventsThe Butler Public Library will host its second annual Light Up Night from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.In addition to lighting the tree and library lights, there will be a hot chocolate bar, holiday crafts for all ages, holiday music, caroling and a special visit from Santa Claus.Other holiday library programs include Gingerbread House Decorating at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 8 and the Polar Express Party at 6 p.m. Dec. 17.For more information check out the library’s website, Facebook page, or stop by the library, 218 N. ‘Triple Fun’ bash planned SaturdaySAXONBURG — The Friends of the South Butler Community Library in Saxonburg will host the Holiday “Triple Fun” Bash, its annual holiday dinner fundraiser, from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Saxonburg VFW, 572 W. Main St.Following an Italian buffet dinner, entertainment will feature Dr. Trina Hess’ Comedy World. Hess of Cranberry Township built the show on the Vaudeville style that offers something for everyone and the variety shows of the 1970s.There also will be music and dancing, a cash bar, a raffle and door prizes.Tickets must be purchased in advance at the library, 240 W. Main St.

Freeport celebrates ChristmasFREEPORT — Santa, a parade, business open houses, a Christmas sale, a bake sale and a Christmas house tour are all part of Freeport Celebrates Christmas from Friday through Sunday.The Freeport Area Library Christmas and bake sale will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the library, 428 Market St. Seasonal decorations, other holiday items, baked goods, collectibles, other flea market items and thousands of used books will be available.Business open houses will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday and include opportunities to win gift baskets. Later that day, the Christmas parade with Santa will begin at 1 p.m.The house tour will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 12 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Stops include a 1910 house with 15 full-size decorated trees; a house and law office formerly the Guckenheimer Brewery; and the Freeport History Center. Tickets are available at the Freeport Area Library. On tour days, buy tickets at the history center, 210 Sixth Street. Proceeds benefit the Freeport Renaissance Association. Christmas cookie sale scheduledCHICORA — North Butler Presbyterian Church, 137 N. Butler Church Road, will have a Christmas cookie sale Saturday.Assorted homemade cookies will be available but must be ordered in advance. To order, call Donna Moser at 724-282-1992.The cookies will be ready for pick up from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Cranberry, Adams townships display holiday housesCRANBERRY TWP — Seven homes in Cranberry and Adams townships will display many types of holiday decor during the 2015 Cranberry Women’s Club Christmas House Tour from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday.The tour will begin at the Cranberry Township Municipal Center, where a local Girl Scout troop will sing holiday songs and a 50/50 raffle will be offered.The tour will feature seven homes including a model home in The Links housing development, an Eden Square apartment, a model home in the BelleVue housing plan and a custom-built Victorian home.Participants will receive a booklet with the stories of each house on the tour, addresses and driving directions.All proceeds will benefit the Gleaner’s Food Bank and Habitat for Humanity.For ticket information, visit www.cranberrywomensclub.org.

Symphony Association offers house tourRENFREW — The Butler County Symphony Association’s 26th Holiday Tour of Homes will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.This self-guided tour features six local homes trimmed out for the holidays. The house tour is a major fundraising event for the symphony association.Tickets are available at the symphony office, 259 S. Main St.; May’s Music Shoppe, 247 E. Jefferson St.; Meridian Gift Shop, 298 Meridian Road; and on the day of the tour at any of the homes.For more information, visit www.butlersymphony.org or call 724-283-1402.There also will be a cookie reception from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hill United Presbyterian Church, 501 Second St. A luncheon to benefit the church will be available at the same location from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Christmas cookie walk to aid libraryThe South Butler Community Library, 240 W. Main St., Saxonburg, will have a Christmas cookie walk from 3 to 8 p.m. Dec. 9 at the Fieldstone Barn at Armstrong Farms, 248 Westminster Road.Participants will stroll through the barn filling a container from a selection of 30 kinds of donated holiday cookies.Tickets are available at the library. All proceeds will benefit the library.

School district sets senior holiday eventJACKSON TWP — The Seneca Valley School District will have the 18th annual Senior Holiday Event at 12:30 p.m. Dec. 18 at the senior high school, 128 Seneca School Road.This special holiday presentation is for senior citizens living in the Seneca Valley School District community and will feature the Seneca Valley Jazz Band, String Ensemble and Senior High School Madrigal Singers. A holiday meal also will be served for lunch in the cafeteria.The event is free, but reservations are required.
