For theTroops

Here are ways you can thank those who serve our nation:

DONATE DIRECTLYThe USO website, www.uso.org, has several programs for sending gifts and packages to troops throughout the year. Under the “How We Help” heading, “Programs” subheading, you will find a number of options, including “Service Members,” “Families” and “In Transition.”The Yellow Ribbon Girls of Ellwood City make mailing lists of soldiers in need of cards, letters and packages. The group sends 60 to 100 packages a month overseas to eight different countries. Visit www.yellowribbongirls.com or its Facebook page. The Boucek’s Battalion organization sends Santa’s favorite chocolate chip cookies to the troops. There are directions for baking and packaging cookies on its website. Monetary donations also are accepted. Visit www.bouceksbattalion.org/donations.

GIVE BLOODGiving blood through the American Red Cross helps maintain the military’s stockpile. To find a blood drive or donation center near you, visit www.redcrossblood.org.

SUPPORT TROOPS’ FAMILIESDeployed troops miss the holidays. The families of active service members feel this, too. Ways to show support to these families, include handwritten cards, holiday gifts and cookies and community events. Find these ways to support families through organizations like Military One Source.

VOLUNTEER YOUR TIMEWhile troops need support, a number of veterans are more reachable and also need support. Show your appreciation for those who have helped protect the nation by volunteering at the VA Butler Healthcare or a nursing home.
