PIAA vote changes landscape
MECHANICSBURG — The playoff system in Pennsylvania high school sports is all shook up.
That is because the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association on Wednesday voted to expand to six classifications in football from four. And it voted to expand basketball, baseball and softball to six classifications from four.
The PIAA board also voted that boys and girls soccer, along with girls volleyball, will increase from three to four classes.
These changes start in the 2016-17 school year.
“Obviously, the vote speaks for itself,” said Scott Heinauer, Mars athletic director and football coach and one of the three WPIAL representatives to vote no. “There’s not a whole lot anybody can do. ... We’re going to look for the good in it.”
