Gremlins continue their roll

Karns City beats up perennial contender Clarion, 48-6

CLARION — Despite a more down-to-earth performance than usual, the Karns City football team managed to run away with another victory.

The Gremlins trounced Clarion 48-6 Friday night at Clarion University’s Memorial Stadium.

The win however was marred by four Gremlins turnovers, including three interceptions and one fumble lost.

The running game for Karns City didn’t put up its usual stats. The Gremlins rushed for just 184 yards on the night.

“Both teams were sloppy. We played sloppy,” Karns City coach Ed Conto said. “We’ve got to clean it up.”

Karns City struck in the first quarter with a 10-yard run by Colin Dunmyre. Maverick Kelsea helped in the five-minute drive with a 23-yard run of his own.

The Gremlins continued in the second quarter after Chandler Turner recovered a Clarion fumble at the Karns City 35-yard line. Despite two fumbles committed by Karns City that were recovered, the Gremlins surged downfield for another touchdown scored by quarterback Cullen Williams with a three-yard keeper.

The Bobcats’ special teams unit also suffered Friday. A punt attempt by Spencer Miller went awry after the ball bounced off the back of another Clarion defender. Miller recovered the ball at the Bobcats’ 13-yard line, but the Gremlins got the ball after a turnover on downs.

After another Gremlins touchdown scored by Maverick Kelsea on the ensuing drive, Clarion looked to have found its stride. Bobcats junior Josh Kriebel ran for 83 yards on a fake end around play for Clarion’s lone score of the night. The run was also the only attempt by Kriebel.

Clarion then struck on defense after the Gremlins’ Kelsea fumbled at the Karns City 37-yard line. Clarion’s Thomas Wurster recovered the ball.

However, the celebration and comeback attempt was short-lived. After a quick three-and-out that included a sack for a loss of nine yards, the Bobcats punted the ball away.

Clarion had another opportunity after Brendan Miller intercepted Karns City’s Cullen Williams with about seven minutes left in the third quarter.

However, another quick three-and-out forced the Bobcats to punt again. However Karns City scored again after senior Evan Stitt returned the punt 64 yards for another Gremlins touchdown to increase the lead to 35-6. Karns City sealed the game after senior Seth Silverio returned an interception from Clarion’s Brendan Miller 20 yards for a defensive touchdown, bringing the score to 41-6 with 11:52 left in the game.

The Gremlins completed zero passes for the game with Miller and Spencer Miller throwing an interception each.

“We made too many mistakes against a really good football team,” Clarion coach Larry Wiser said. “We had to play flawless football to beat them and we didn’t.”
