Library plans celebration

Facility moved 10 years ago

EVANS CITY — Residents who have lived in the borough for a decade or longer may remember seeing volunteers moving hundreds of books up Main and South Jackson streets in shopping carts.

A celebration of that event to move the Evans City Public Library is planned for Saturday.

The 10th anniversary of the library’s move to its building at 204 S. Jackson St. will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the library.

Librarian Michelina Stickney said the celebration will coincide with the kickoff of the library’s summer reading program.

Events will include free raffles, a collection of nonperishable food for the Evans City Community Food Cupboard, refreshments and a visit by Pittsburgh Mad Science.

Stickney said Mad Science will present its “Champions of Heroes” program, which celebrates the inventors and scientists who have greatly improved life in America. She said the show is aimed at children from preschool age to fifth grade.

Another activity will be the bookend contest. Stickney said participants can pick up a bookend to take home, decorate and return to the library for judging at the town’s Oktoberfest in September.

Stickney also will hand out information regarding the activities at the library.

“We have a lot going on at the library this summer,” Stickney said.

She said the late John and Leone Irvine 11 years ago donated land to the library board. The board sold the land and bought the current library building with the proceeds.

The building was formerly a Citizen’s Bank office, which eventually became NexTier Bank.

The library was formerly at 232 E. Main St.
