Mars tennis gets WPIAL win

Mars junior Aaron Gruber won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles to help the Planets boy’s tennis team defeat Central Catholic 5-0 in the first round of the WPIAL tournament Wednesday at Mars.

The Planets will play Peters Township, which beat Moon, in the quarterfinals Friday at a site to be determined.

Josh Raymundo and Tim Hunt also picked up singles wins for Mars.

Baseball

Knoch’s baseball team is one win away from its first section title since 2000.

The Knights moved a step closer to winning Section 3-AAA with a 10-0, five-inning win over Highlands.

Dom Bucko hit a three-run home run and drove in four runs for the Knights (12-1, 9-1).

Logan Moroney won the 100-meter dash, finishing in 11.3 seconds to help Karns City beat North Clarion 95-54.

On the girls’ side, Emily Hegedus won the 200 dash and long jump to help the Gremlins sink the Wolves 90-60.
