Funds go to parks

Commissioners OK 10 projects

The Butler County Commissioners on Wednesday approved 10 projects to be funded by the 2015 Butler County Local Park Renovation Program.

Gary Pinkerton, director of county parks and recreation, said this is the 21st year for the program. This year nearly $69,000 was given out.

The allocations include:

• $7,500 to Adams Township, where the project will entail repairs to the park’s walking trails, replacement of wooden slats on benches, replacement of mulch at the playground, shellacking benches and the gazebo, and repair or replacement of a lamp post.

• $5,235 to Butler, where playground equipment and fall surface will be installed in Father Marinaro Park.

• $4,500 to Butler Township, where vinyl siding will be installed over deteriorating wood siding, as well as new roof shingles, gutters and downspouts, on a building.

• $7,500 to Cranberry Township, where repairs will be done on the skate park, including replacing eight ramps, three transition platforms and an access control lock. Maintenance also will take place on a perimeter fence.

• $7,500 to East Butler, where the project includes an asphalt walkway, handicap parking spaces and shingles.

• $6,363 to Evans City, where a renovation of a basketball court will include crack repair, new line paint, repainting basketball hoops, backboards and nets, and refurbishing seating areas.

• $7,500 to Penn Township, where a pavilion will be built at Harcrest Park.

• $7,500 to Seven Fields, where the project will entail changing its playgrounds to rubber safety structures.

• $7,500 to Slippery Rock Township, where the project will include excavating three baseball fields four to six inches below the current surface, adding drainage and replacing the batting cage net.

n $7,500 to Zelienople, where the project will include 20 new picnic tables.

Pinkerton said the department got 21 applications. Up to 75 percent of these projects can be funded by the county money, and the municipalities have to provide at least a 25 percent match.
