Route 8 boat shop closes its doors

PENN TWP — A long-standing boat shop on Route 8 has closed.

Wind and Water Boatworks, 455 Pittsburgh Road, closed Wednesday after 29 years. The site has been a boat shop under other names since 1970.

Paul Egbert, owner of the shop since 1986, said he is beginning his retirement.

“I’m going to focus on more boating, more travel,” said Egbert of Meridian.

The shop sold unmotorized boats and accessories.

Egbert, who turns 70 this month, said he has been involved in the boating community in Butler County for decades.

“I’ve been here a long time,” he said, adding he was involved with the regatta at Lake Arthur, the Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau, and is a member of the Moraine and Lake Arthur sailing clubs.

Egbert expects to stay in the county.

“I’ve got a lot of friends here. So I have no plans to move,” he said.

He doubts the building will remain a boat shop, but he added, “I don’t suspect, but you never know.”

Egbert, who has boated at sites around the world, said his sons, Paul Irwin, 50, and Glenn, 39, traveled from Colorado and New Hampshire to help him close his shop.

He said they are continuing to pack up the inventory.
