2 hurt in I-79 crash

Helicopter lands on Interstate to pick up victim

HARMONY — Two people were injured in a two-vehicle wreck Thursday evening on Interstate 79 in the borough, authorities said.

The crash happened about 6:50 p.m. when a Jeep and a Chevrolet Suburban collided on the highway near the Zelienople exit between Little Creek Road and Route 68. Both sport utility vehicles were southbound.

State police are investigating but an accident report was not immediately available.

Harmony volunteer firefighters had to cut open the Jeep to rescue one person trapped and injured. A medical helicopter landed on the highway and flew that person to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

The other injured person in the Chevy was taken by Harmony EMS ambulance to Allegheny General.

The extent of the injuries to both occupants was not known. Both were “local residents,” said Chief Neal Nanna of the Harmony Volunteer Fire Company.

The crash closed the highway for about 40 minutes, authorities said.
