SV grad Crivelli shines for Lions

Sophomore soccer forward among Behrend's top scorers

ERIE — After surprising himself, Anthony Crivelli is turning up the expectations of himself on the soccer field.

The Seneca Valley graduate and Penn State-Behrend sophomore forward has reached double-digits in goals scored for a second successive season.

“When I came here, my goal was to make an impact on the program,” Crivelli said. “I’ve made more of an impact than I thought I would.

“Now I’m aiming a little bit higher. That only seems natural.”

Crivelli scored 10 goals and added an assist as a freshman for the Lions last year. So far this season, he’s netted 11 goals and six assists for 28 points.

“He’s a difference maker on the field,” Lions coach Dan Perritano said of Crivelli. “He’s a natural goal scorer who knows how to find the back of the net.”

PSU-Behrend knows how to find wins as well. The Lions are 15-3 on the season, including 9-0 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.

Perritano has 266 wins in 22 seasons with the Lions and has posted winning campaigns in 16 of the past 17 years.

“We try to open up space for Anthony,” Perritano said. “His movement off the ball is getting better and he’s always had the ability to play one-on-one.”

And one-on-one is how Crivelli likes to play.

“I feel like I’m good going at the goal,” he said. “Running at somebody one-on-one is probably my biggest strength and the system here really suits my style of play.”

At 5-foot-9, 150 pounds, Crivelli isn’t exactly a physical presence on the field. So he attracts a lot of physical play.

“I need to get stronger so I don’t get knocked off the ball so easily,” he admitted. “But I try to avoid that style of play.”

Crivelli isn’t the only big scorer on the Lions. Teammate Jimmy Belack has 16 goals and 41 points this season and recently broke the program’s career assist record.

“It definitely helps having him on the field because we provide a dual threat,” Crivelli said of Belack. “And he’s a senior, so I’ve looked up to him and have learned from him.”

Crivelli isn’t the only Seneca Valley graduate on the Behrend roster, either. Colton Smith is a freshman goalkeeper and Jared Myers is a freshman midfielder.

Perritano said his program is quite familiar with the Raiders.

“(SV coach) George (Williams) brings his team up to our camps, so their kids are on our campus,” he said. “They interact with our players, see the facilities and our academic program is an easy sell.

“We get a number of kids from Seneca and from down that way in general.”

Butler grad Jake Gamble has Behrend’s career goal scoring mark of 59.

“If he continues to progress, Anthony may take a shot at that,” Perritano admitted.

Crivelli has some goals in mind. That’s just not one of them.

“I want to continue to be one of the top players on this team, scoring goals, and winning,” he said.

“The winning is the most important thing.”
