Cranberry's Relay for Life takes aim at fighting cancer

Organizers hope to raise $110,000

CRANBERRY TWP — Thousands of people are expected to descend on North Boundary Park on Saturday for the American Cancer Society’s annual Relay for Life fundraiser.

Jan Rogers, an organizer of the event, said there will likely be more than 25 teams in the relay. Each team member will pledge to walk around the track for a certain amount of time, although each team is asked to have at least one member walking during the entire 24-hour span.

The relay starts at 10 a.m. and will last for a full day.

Rogers will walk as part of the Cranberry Sunrise Rotary’s team. This will be the fifth time she has participated in the relay.

In her job as an insurance provider, Rogers said she sees firsthand how expensive a cancer diagnosis can be. She said she’s also seen how many expenses aren’t covered by insurance.

“It’s certainly something I believe is a worthwhile cause and something I’m passionate about,” she said. “I see a lot of people who battle this disease, and it’s expensive to be diagnosed with something catastrophic like that. Health care doesn’t cover everything.”

She said groups like the American Cancer Society provide wigs for cancer patients and provide transportation for them to get to treatments.

Rogers said those are only two examples of the many ways the money raised at the Relay for Life goes to help people in need.

“There are a lot of things people don’t realize that are expensive that go along with treatment,” she said.

Rogers said the goal for the event is to raise more than $110,000. As of last week, the Relay for Life already had raised $85,000.

“We feel pretty confident we can reach that goal,” she said.
