Ex-teacher guilty of corruption of minors

Jonathan Crum
Sentence includes prison, house arrest

A young woman's brown eyes filled with tears Wednesday as deputies led her once-respected Moniteau High School teacher out of a Butler County court room to prison.

Jonathan Crum, 27, pleaded guilty to five counts of corruption of minors: one count for each girl he victimized between 2009 and 2013.

Butler County Judge William Shaffer sentenced Crum to serve 90 to 180 days in prison, with parole at 90 days. When Crum is released, he will spend a year on house arrest with electronic monitoring followed by 72 months of probation.

“I know a lot of people have been negatively affected by my decisions,” Crum told the judge. “To these people I wish to apologize.”

Court records say Crum, who taught 11th-grade English and AP European history, victimized the girls — students — to varying degrees from exchanging sexually explicit photographs on cell phones to oral sex.

One girl, in the criminal complaint, said Crum changed her English grade to a “B” after he touched her buttocks.

The series of alleged actions occurred on school grounds, sometimes during classroom hours, immediately after school or during after school activities.

Crum, a married stepfather to two, also was an assistant football coach. But none of the allegations against him involve that job.

The lone victim to speak told the judge she had respected Crum when he began sending her text messages. His interaction quickly escalated to sexual comments by phone and in person leaving her embarrassed and ashamed.

Now in college, the girl said she reported Crum's activities because she wanted to stop him from doing the same to other students.

But then, the woman said she felt victimized a second time when there was a backlash among her peers who believed she had erroneously done harm to Crum's reputation.

Assistant District Attorney Christine Studeny told the judge that all of the victims in the case had asked for the same thing: “Closure.”

Before sentencing, Crum was evaluated by a member of the state's Sexual Offender Assessment Board who determined he does not meet the criteria to be deemed a sexually violent predator. He still must register his whereabouts with state police, however, for a length of time to be determined later by state officials.

In addition to the supervision time, Crum was ordered to have no further contact with the victims and to pay a $2,500 fine.

Moniteau fired Crum after the charges were made public, and he has since been employed by a restaurant.

Moniteau Superintendent George Svolos did not return a telephone call seeking comment.
