Man arrested after alleged knife attack

A 45-year-old city man was arrested Sunday afternoon after Butler police say he attacked a woman with a knife.

Police said Weston George Atwell attacked the woman about 12:20 p.m. in front of the Butler Transit Authority terminal on East Cunningham Street.

The victim, 47, of Butler told investigators that she did not know the suspect and had never seen him before that day, according to a police report.

She said she was seated on a bench outside the terminal when the suspect sat down next to her and cut her on the left arm with a knife.

Authorities did not immediately identify the woman, who was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for treatment of a cut on the arm that required 12 stitches, police said.

A short time after the suspected attack, officers caught Atwell walking in the 300 block of South Washington Street.

Police said they found him carrying a key chain knife that has a 2-inch blade.

Atwell, who has no known address, was arraigned on a felony charge of aggravated assault, and placed in the Butler County Prison on $25,000 bail.
