Driver fled scene

He gets probation in crash that hurt another motorist

The unlicensed driver in a 2012 hit-and-run crash that injured another motorist will spend the next four years on probation.

Butler County Judge William Shaffer on Tuesday sentenced 58-year-old Peter A. Grujich of Saxonburg to serve 48 months in the Butler County Intermediate Punishment Program.

For the first 90 days of the program, Grujich will be on house arrest with electronic monitoring. The remainder of the program will be probationary.

Grujich in December pleaded guilty in the case to a pair of misdemeanor charges — causing an accident while not properly licensed and being a habitual offender for driving with a suspended license.

He also pleaded guilty to a summary charge of driving during suspension.

“It’s a fair sentence that was negotiated as part of a plea agreement,” said Grujich’s attorney, county chief public defender Kevin Flaherty,

State police said Grujich was eastbound on Winfield Road just after 7 p.m. March 9 when his car struck another car stopped at a red light at the Route 356 intersection in Winfield Township.

Mariah G. Bielstein, then 20, of Butler, a passenger in the other car, was treated at Butler Memorial Hospital for minor injuries.

Following the wreck, Grujich drove off south on Route 356, police said. But two other motorists saw the crash and followed him to the area of Jack’s Trailer Park in nearby Buffalo Township.

When the car stopped, one of the witnesses got out of his vehicle and forced open Grujich’s door. But he ended up running into the woods and hiding, according to court documents. Troopers eventually arrested him.

A search of Grujich’s car turned up a cup with an alcoholic beverage in it.

Police charged Grujich with four crimes, including fleeing to avoid apprehension. But prosecutors withdrew that charge and another misdemeanor, disorderly conduct, as well as nine other traffic tickets in exchange for his plea.

In addition to probation, Shaffer sentenced Grujich to 50 hours of community service, to pay a $500 fine and to receive drug and alcohol counseling.

Grujich’s criminal record includes at least a half-dozen drunken driving convictions.
