Driver injured in SUV crash

BUTLER TWP — A motorist was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital with unknown injuries this morning after he lost control of his sport utility vehicle, slammed into a tree stump and ended upside down along McCalmont Road, authorities said.

Rescuers declined to discuss the middle-aged man's injuries, which they described as “moderate.”

Butler Township police did not immediately release the man's name.

He was traveling west on McCalmont Road, a little more than one mile west of Route 8, about 6:50 a.m. when his Kia Sportage went off the road and crashed, police said. He was wearing a seat belt but his air bag did not deploy apparently because the side of the SUV hit the tree stump.

The vehicle rolled onto its roof.

The injured man was reportedly unresponsive but breathing when emergency responders found him.

A police officer had to break the SUV's back window to reach the man and check on his condition. Meridian volunteer firefighters used a back board to pull him out through that same window.
