South Butler board rewrites volunteer policy
JEFFERSON TWP — The South Butler School District is rewriting its volunteer policy to categorize volunteers based on their time in school buildings and their contact with students.
If the school board adopts the policy, some volunteers would need to undergo a background check beginning in the 2012-13 school year.
The policy was discussed at the board meeting last Wednesday and it is scheduled to be voted on this Wednesday. Final adoption of the policy could occur a month after its first reading, following a second board vote.
“This really establishes for us a policy tying together a lot of loose procedures from building to building,” said Dale Lumley, superintendent, at a school board meeting Wednesday.
“We don’t want to deter people, but we want to protect students at the same time,” Lumley said.
District administrators also are revisiting the policy that requires athletes to have annual baseline concussion tests. That policy may change to require a test only every other-year, in accordance with a new state law.
In addition, the district plans to revise its fee structure for classroom rentals, said Nelda Bird, board president.
