Vo-tech budget cuts some jobs

BUTLER TWP — Some jobs will be lost under the Butler County Vocational-Technical School’s second 2011-12 proposed budget.

The Joint Operating Committee, which represents the seven school districts that comprise the vo-tech, passed the $4.2 million budget Thursday night.

Joe Cunningham, director, declined to say what positions would be eliminated or how many. The vo-tech has 44 employees.

The new 2011-12 budget is $11 less than this year’s and down $174,666 from the first proposed 2011-12 budget, which failed to be approved by several school districts.

Cunningham said he would present the new budget to the Seneca Valley and South Butler school boards, which rejected the first one. He also may present it to Butler and Slippery Rock school boards, which took no action on the first budget. Karns City, Mars and Moniteau passed the first and larger budget.

If five of the seven districts pass the budget, then ballots from each board member will be opened at a May 26 meeting at the vo-tech. A majority of the schools’ 63 board members need to approve it.
