Tractor trailers wreck, Hazmat called

Two tractor-trailers and at least one car were involved in a crash in the southbound lane of Interstate 79 on Monday morning in Worth Township.

According to preliminary information, 911 dispatchers around 9:30 a.m. sent Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Department, rescue crews and the Butler County Hazmat team to the scene, which was about a mile from the intersection of Route 422 and I-79.

Emergency responders reported an active oil and gas leak from the tractor portion of a refrigerated box truck involved in the wreck.

Hazmat team members had the leak contained by 10:30 a.m., but remained on the scene for “extensive cleanup.”

One tractor trailer could be seen on its side on an embankment along I-79, where the right lane was blocked due to the accident.

At least one car was involved in the crash.

Two people were transported to Grove City Hospital, according to discussion on the police scanner.

Initial calls on the accident reported one tractor trailer being on fire, but additional fire crews responding to the scene were canceled.
