Code orange air quality alert issued today for Butler County

Butler County is included in the code orange air quality alert issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

Mostly sunny skies, light winds and high temperatures in the low to mid 90s could likely contribute to 8-hour average concentrations of ozone in the code orange range on Wednesday, the DEP said in a Tuesday press release.

A code orange alert represents unhealthy pollution levels for sensitive groups of people.

Young children, the elderly and those with respiratory problems are especially vulnerable to the effects of air pollution and should limit outdoor activities amid these alerts.

Residents and businesses within the affected areas are asked to help reduce air pollution by: driving less, limiting engine idling, refueling cars and trucks after dusk and conserving electricity by setting air conditioning to a higher temperature and turning off lights that are not in use.

Other affected areas in Southwestern PA include Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Washington, and Westmoreland counties.
