Mars man faces 25 child porn charges

A man from Mars has been accused of saving child porn on multiple devices.

The Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office has charged James P. McCarthy, 55, with 25 felony counts of child pornography and one felony count of criminal use of communication facility.According to charging documents, investigators received information on May 10 that child pornography had been sent to an IP address in Mars.Investigators said they traced the IP address to McCarthy's home on Pittsburgh Street in Mars, and later executed a search warrant on the home.“At least two electronic storage devices were recovered” during the search, the charging investigator stated in the affidavit.Investigators said McCarthy was home at the time, and agreed to speak with them.“He agreed to be interviewed and subsequently averred that he knew why we were there and stated that he would be going to jail,” investigators said.Investigators said McCarthy willingly spoke with them and acknowledged to do so without an attorney.According to investigator, McCarthy claimed he had been looking at child porn for about nine years, describing it similar to an addiction.“(McCarthy) indicated we would find child pornography on his computer and that he wanted to be honest because he was ashamed of his actions and has had a problem with child pornography for a long time,” investigators said.Investigators said they later found “several hundred files of what appeared to be apparent child pornography media files” on the computer.Investigators said they also found child porn files saved to a Google Drive account on McCarthy's cellphone.During the interview, McCarthy explained his search techniques and explained that he realized he some day would be caught.“(McCarthy) thanked your affiant for the intervention and stated that he could finally be the person he always wanted to be,” investigators said.McCarthy is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing Tuesday before District Judge Wayne Seibel.
