Police use Taser on fleeing teen

Donovan Philpot
Arrest followed fight in Island

Butler police said they Tasered a Lawrence County teenager who allegedly ran from officers while investigating a reported fight in the city's Island neighborhood.

Donovan M. Philpot, 18, of Volant, is charged with resisting arrest, false identification to law enforcement authorities and disorderly conduct. He is free on $1,500 bond.

Officers were called shortly after 4 p.m. Friday to a large fight on the 400 block of Shore Street, police said. While on their way there, officers got a radio call advising them that those involved in the alleged fight had left in two vehicles.

Minutes later, police stopped one of the vehicles, with four occupants, on South Chestnut Street near West Wayne Street.

Philpot, a front seat passenger, is accused of giving a bogus name and date of birth while officers were getting personal information from the occupants.

Police said because they could not immediately identify the teen, they detained him. But when they tried to handcuff him, he allegedly pulled away from an officer and ran.

The officer told him to stop. But Philpot did not stop, police said, and the officer deployed his Taser. Moments later, the defendant stopped and laid on the ground.

At the station, police said, he told officers that he ran because he was on probation and he was afraid of getting in trouble for the fight.
