Stellar winter for North

Some high school winter sports reached their conclusion.

Others may or may not be finished. We are all on hold for that decision.

We can certainly figure out who “won the winter” in terms of Butler County high schools. That distinction belongs to North Catholic.

The Trojans basketball team is 26-2, won the WPIAL Class 3A championship and is riding a 20-game winning streak into the PIAA quarterfinal round.

North Catholic's boys also average 79 points per game, most of any team in the WPIAL at any classification.

The Trojanettes basketball team is 26-1, won the WPIAL Class 4A championship and is riding a 19-game winning streak into the PIAA quarterfinal round.

The girls' only loss is to undefeated Chartiers Valley, which has won close to 50 consecutive games now.

The school's success did not stop at basketball. North Catholic's hockey team was 17-2-1 this year, winning the PIHL Class A Northwest Division by a whopping 20-point margin.

Dom Dezort, Akezhan Melis and Quinten Shaffer combined to score 52 goals in 21 games. Goaltender Chris McFayden posted a 1.83 goals-against average, four shutouts and a .937 save percentage.

Those three North Catholic teams were a combined 69-5-1 this winter.

But wait ... There's more.

Senior diver Kyle Maziarz not only won the WPIAL Class 2A championship, he shattered the previous district record by 36 points. That record was held by Beaver's Andrew Cestra, who edged Maziarz for the WPIAL title last year.

North Catholic freshman Maggie Foley won the WPIAL girls 2A diving crown, outscoring the runner-up in the competition by 41.40 points.

Won the winter? I'd say North Catholic's done that.

But if you're looking for a public school winner, look no farther than Knoch.

The Knights won no WPIAL titles, but they were a model of consistency this winter.

Knoch's boys basketball team finished 19-4, won 16 straight games after a season-opening loss, and played its games at a feverish pace.

Knoch's girls were 17-7 and picked up the program's first WPIAL tournament win in more than a decade.

Knights senior wrestler Guy DeLeonardis made school history by becoming the first Knoch wrestler to qualify for the state tournament after coming within seconds of becoming the program's first matman to win a section championship.

Butler won WPIAL championships in two different sports as well — the boys basketball team and swimmer Laura Goettler.

With the inconclusive ending being what it is, the county had a pretty successful winter sports season.

With North Catholic leading the way.
