400 without power after evening wind storm

More than 400 customers in Butler County remain without electricity Sunday after strong winds swept across the area overnight.

“Trees and wires were downed in various parts of the county,” a dispatcher for the county's communication center said just before noon. He noted that the “middle of the night” is when much of the damage occurred.

Peak wind gusts overnight reached 56 mph at the Butler County Airport, according to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh.

In the aftermath, around 2,000 electrical outages were reported countywide. Utility crews for West Penn Power and the Central Electric Cooperative have been making steady progress restoring service.

Around noon, West Penn Power officials said there were 389 customers without service. Penn Township has the most current outages with 83, while Eau Claire has 79 and Jefferson Township has 62 customers without service.

Central Electric Cooperative reported 30 customers still without power around noon. Thirteen of those members are in Cherry Township and eight are in Venango Township.

There are no weather-related advisories in effect and the forecast is calling for relatively calm winds and higher than usual temperatures for Butler County.

Expect partly sunny, skies this afternoon with a high near 42 and winds of 6 to 13 mph, the weather service said.

It will be mostly cloudy tonight with a low around 31, with northeast wind around 5 mph becoming light and variable in the evening.

On Monday, it will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 49 and light and variable winds of 5 to 7 mph in the morning.
