Man killed Sunday evening crossing Route 19

CRANBERRY TWP — A fatal accident Sunday evening on Route 19 claimed the life of a 77-year-old man from Oil City, Venango County.

Thomas Jarzab was crossing Route 19 near the intersection with St. Francis Way around 6:40 p.m. Sunday when a Honda SUV traveling north on the state highway struck him, Cranberry police said. According to police, Jarzab was crossing the road on foot with his wife. They were heading east, away from the Cranberry Mall.

According to Cranberry police Sgt. Chuck Mascellino, both the SUV's driver and witnesses said the vehicle had a green light when the collision occurred.

Police are not releasing the name of the driver.

Jarzab was taken to nearby UPMC Passavant – Cranberry by Cranberry Township EMS. Due to the severity of his injuries, police said, he was flown to UPMC Mercy in Pittsburgh, where he died from his injuries before 9:10 p.m.

The investigation into the collision is ongoing, Mascellino said, but police do not expect to file criminal charges against the driver.
