State police ask community to check on neighbors in need during heat advisory

With high temperatures and high humidity expected this weekend, state police at Troop D are asking for residents to check on each other.

The National Weather Service issuing a heat advisory for Butler County and the surrounding area that is expected to last until Saturday evening. To help keep everyone safe in this heat, Troop D is asking the community members to check on neighbors that may suffer from weather-induced health problems or do not have access to air conditioning.

“If you have not seen a neighbor for some time or feel there may be a problem, please immediately contact 911 or the State Police and we will check on the welfare of that person,” said state police in a press release.

For those in need of air conditioning, state police are in contact with Emergency Management Agencies throughout the Troop D area to help residents get to more comfortable locations.

For those out driving with children and pets - do not leave them unattended in a vehicle. Even with windows down, temperatures in a vehicle rise quickly so even a few minutes, police say, can be deadly. Residents are asked to call 911 if a child or pet is seen in a hot car.

For those affected by the heat in Evans City, the borough announced it will set up cooling stations to help residents deal with the heat.On Friday, two cooling stations will be available in Evans City. One is located at Ritzert Hall on East Main Street, which will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. A second cooling station will be made available at Baptist Church on South Washington Street from noon until 4 p.m.On Saturday, a cooling station will be set up at the Evans City Library, located on South Jackson Street, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
