LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

I find your July 7 editorial (“A San Francisco treat: Free government stuff and filth”) very disingenuous. A (San Francisco) household earning $117,000/year for a family of four or $105,350 for an individual is considered “low income” according to a report from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The cost of living is 62 percent higher than the U.S. average.

One person pays $2,000/month just to share one room in house with four or more people or $3,000 to $4,000/month for a studio apartment. The average house price is well over $1 million. Most families are priced out of the housing market. Even some teachers and other people who have “good jobs” are forced to live in their cars because they can’t afford rent.

Only people that work for the tech giants can afford to live decently in San Francisco. Low rent districts are being revitalized for these high wage earners adding to the homeless population. People are being forced to live on the streets because they can’t afford housing.
