SRU represented at university gathering

Slippery Rock University was represented at a gathering of state university governing bodies in Harrisburg Wednesday.

Jeff Smith, chairman of SRU's council of trustees and a Butler City Council member, introduced Daniel Greenstein at Greenstein's inauguration as chancellor of Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education. Thursday, Smith will be giving one of several presentations to the group's Board of Governors.

Smith didn't attend strictly to represent SRU, but rather he's serving as president of the statewide network of state college trustees called the Pennsylvania Association of Council of Trustees or PACT.

However, he is hoping they can manage to raise awareness that SRU is in a network with Pennsylvania's other state schools.

“We're thinking about what we can do to let people know that Slippery Rock is a great school itself, but it's also part of a 100,000 student system,” Smith said.

He said the organization may see more activity on the local level in the future as trustees aim to build their roles.

“For years trustees have wanted to have more responsibility at the local level,” Smith said. “If you want more responsibility, you also need more accountability.”

Greenstein, the new chancellor, previously worked at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, according to an SRU news release. He worked on higher education initiatives for poor and minority students.

Smith's presentation to the Board of Governors will describe members and the business of the state's six PACT committees.
