Police arrest 3 in drug raid

'Flash bang' grenade used in apartment

Three people were arrested and a cache of suspected cocaine, heroin and marijuana seized along with more than $2,600 in currency during a Monday night drug raid at a Butler apartment, authorities said.

Danielle L. Napier, 35, of Butler; Floyd B. Carpenter, 35, of Pittsburgh; and Jeremy J. Rogers, 42, of Butler are each behind bars on $100,000 bail at the Butler County Prison.

The Butler County Drug Task Force nabbed the trio after officers executed a search warrant around 8 p.m. at Napier's apartment on the 400 block of West New Castle Street.

The raid followed an investigation that began in early December, according to court documents, when a police informant reported narcotics sales at the home.

Chief county Detective Tim Fennell, who heads the task force, on Tuesday described Carpenter as the primary dealer. He said Napier and Rogers served as Carpenter's “runners,” or the people who delivered the drugs and picked up the money

On Dec. 14, investigators said, the task force conducted a controlled drug buy using the informant to purchase crack at Napier's home. Rogers was the alleged seller.

Another controlled buy was made in January, this time at another location, documents said, when Napier and Rogers sold crack to a police informant.

One more suspected crack buy was subsequently made involving Rogers and Napier near her apartment.

Within 48 hours of the last drug buy, District Judge Sue Haggerty issued the task force a search warrant for the apartment.

Officers used a “flash bang” grenade before entering the apartment. They found Napier, Rogers and Carpenter inside.

Carpenter ran out the back door in an apparent getaway attempt, Fennell said, but officers quickly stopped him.

The flash bang, meanwhile, caused other tenants in the building to call 911 to report hearing the noise, not knowing what it was at the time.

Seized in the search, according to documents, were the following suspected drugs: 1.1 ounces of crack, 102 stamp bags of heroin, one gram of powder heroin and 16.2 grams of marijuana.

The drugs had an estimated street value of more than $5,000.

Also confiscated was $2,645, four scales, drug packaging materials, three marijuana pipes and other contraband.

Haggerty arraigned all three defendants on felony and misdemeanor drug possession charges and felony conspiracy charges.

Rogers, it turned out, had been released from the county prison just the day before the raid. He had been held 11 days, authorities said, for failing to pay child support.
