Rockets grind out win

Defense rules as SR girls down GC, 28-26

Maryann Ackerman scored 11 of her game-high 17 points in the second half as the Slippery Rock High girls basketball team gutted out a 28-26 win over rival Grove City in a game dominated by defense.

Grove City led 9-8 at the half, but Slippery Rock scored 16 points in the third quarter — keyed by nine points from Ackerman — to take the lead for good.

Ackerman spent much of the first half on the bench in foul trouble.

Even though she was held scoreless, Ashley Shea made her presence felt for Slippery Rock (6-3, 3-0).

“Ashley Shea was a savior on hustle plays and defensive stops,” said Slippery Rock coach Amber Osborn.

Defense was certainly the word of the night.

Grove City allowed just three Slippery Rock players to score. Meanwhile, the Rockets limited the Eagles to just four players in the scoring column.

Abby Biddle scored 14 to pace the Eagles (7-1, 1-1).
