Local 4-H members place high in state horse show

Kendall Myers, 12, of Saxonburg finished in the top 10 in two contests at the Pennsylvania State 4-H Horse Show in Harrisburg.

Two girls in the county 4-H recorded top 10 finishes in the recent 59th annual Pennsylvania State 4-H Horse Show in Harrisburg.

Kendall Myers, 12, of Saxonburg and Sadie Greyshock, 14, of Tarentum finished in the top 10 in two competitions during the show, which was held Oct. 26 to 28.

They were among 700 4-H members including seven from the Butler County 4-H who qualified to compete in the show.

“I was really happy,” said Kendall, who placed fourth in the classic hunter under saddle horse contest for ages 8 through 13 and placed fifth in the hunt seat equitation on the flat contest for ages 8 through 11. She rode Invest N Me Roxy.

She said she has been riding horses for seven years, but this was her first 4-H competition.

The show was the first one that Sadie qualified for and did well.

She finished in fifth place in the pole bending horse contest for ages 8 through 13 and in 10th place in the barrel race horse contest for ages 8 through 13. She rode Silkys Two Sweet Mouse.

“It felt really good. I was really shocked on the barrel run because it wasn't the best I've done. I felt good about the pole run,” Sadie said.

She has accumulated a lot of riding experience in her young life.

“I've been riding since I was 5 years old. I joined 4-H when I was 9 or 10,” Sadie said.

The other county 4-H horse club members who qualified for the show are Morgan Murdock, Laine Palmer, Taylor Palmer, Ella Stewart and Abigail Wright.

The show, held at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex, is the final competition of the year for 4-H members enrolled in performance horse projects. Youth from 55 counties participated in the 74 performance classes.

To be eligible for the show, members must advance through qualifying competitions at county and district levels. Events include showmanship, horsemanship, equitation, pleasure, over fences, driving, western riding, reining, trail and timed events. A therapeutic riding division for riders with special needs is also included.
