Icy conditions causes accident on Route 8

Icy road conditions were blamed for a collision this morning that caused a collision between a loaded cement truck and a car on Route 8 in front of the Clearview Mall in Center Township authorities said.

The Montgomery Block Works truck at about 7:45 a.m. struck the other vehicle's fuel tank, spinning the car around and injuring the driver.

Between 30 and 40 gallons of diesel fuel and 10 to 15 gallons of hydraulic fuel also spilled from the truck.

Unionville volunteer firefighters used absorbent pads and oil dry to clean the spill.

The county's Hazardous Materials Team contractor was also called to assist, said Nathan Wulff, Unionville's fire chief.

Kristin Crosby, 41, of Ford City, Armstrong County, who was driving the car, was taken to Butler Memorial with apparent minor injuries, state police said.

Truck driver Jeremy Elder, 35, of Harrisville was not injured.

Police said Elder was  traveling south on Route 8  in the right lane approaching a traffic light changing from green to yellow when he applied his brakes and lost control on an ice patch.

The truck went sideways into the opposing lane. Crosby's northbound Dodge Caliber struck the truck and was forced into the mall's entrance.

A Unionville firefighter and a Butler Ambulance Service crew teamed up to pry open the car's driver's door to get Crosby out.
