Investigators believe shooting, stabbing connected
UPDATE (1:35 p.m.)
Butler police have identified the name of the man stabbed about 1:25 a.m. today during an altercation that left another man dead of a gunshot wound on Wagner Avenue near West Cunningham Street.
Raymond Covelli, 35, was found about a mile away on Zeigler Avenue. Authorities believe he called 911 about 1:35 a.m. to report he had been stabbed in the torso.
He was treated at the scene and taken to Butler Memorial before being transferred to a Pittsburgh hospital for further treatment.
Police said Adam Selfridge, 37, of Butler was pronounced dead of an apparent gunshot to the chest at the scene on Wagner Avenue.
Police are investigating but they have released no other information. Investigators said they believe a Butler man stabbed another man before he was fatally shot in a city alleyway early this morning.
A motive apparently also is uncertain.
“We have suspicions,” said Butler County District Attorney Richard Goldingersaid, “but we don't know what happened yet.”
He said he did not know if anyone else saw the deadly clash or if someone drove the man who was stabbed to Zeigler Avenue following the shooting.
The knife believed to have been used in the stabbing was recovered; the gun has not been, Goldinger said.
