Summit escapees are caught Friday

Three Summit Academy students who escaped from the juvenile detention facility Friday at about 1 p.m. and were all caught by 8:30 p.m.

The trio removed their teacher’s car keys from her pocket and ran out the door, according to state Trooper Amanda Cagno. They allegedly stole a car — a red Volkswagen Jetta with West Virginia plates — and a police pursuit ensued.

The vehicle eventually crashed while heading south on Route 28 near Exit 15, in Harrison Township, Allegheny County, in what school spokesman Dick Roberts in a prepared statement described as an attempt to elude apprehension.

The students were 16, 17 and 18 years old, according to state police.

One was caught soon after the crash by Harrison Township police.

The other two were caught at about 8:30 p.m., according to a police news release, near Ridge Road in Fawn Township, Allegheny County.

Cagno confirmed that theft, escape and unauthorized vehicle use charges will be filed against the three. Additional charges related to the chase and crash will likely be filed later, according to state police in Kittaning, who are handling that aspect of the incident.
