Winfield adding trail to park
WINFIELD TWP — Ground has been broken at the Community Park on Brose Road, where a 1.2-mile trail will be added by the end of the summer.
Township secretary Adam Hartwig said the new trail loop will be 8 feet wide and compliant with the federal Americans With Disabilities Act when completed.
The project is possible due to a $140,000 matching grant from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Winfield Township will provide the 50 percent match through the township park fund and donations made toward the trail, Hartwig said.
“The trail was originally planned for in the township's 2000 Master Site Plan,” Hartwig said. “The township has worked diligently over the years to grow the Community Park without investing many local tax dollars, and this project is no different.”
The grant was the result of a collaboration between Hartwig, former county Parks and Recreation Director Gary Pinkerton and Lance Welliver, who took over for Pinkerton upon his retirement in the spring.
The general contractor for the project will be Holbein, Inc. of Sarver, which submitted the winning bid to the township. Holbein was approved by the supervisors in May.
Work on the trail will be ongoing over the summer and is expected to be completed by the end of August, Hartwig said.
