Winfield Volunteer Fire Department ending service

Winfield firefighter Seth Heller puts out one of the last hot spots at the scene of a garage fire in Winfield Twp. in 2015.

The Winfield Township Volunteer Fire Department will end its service in the township after 30 years in existence.

Township Secretary Adam Hartwig said the supervisors will vote in August to create an ordinance naming Saxonburg, Herman and Buffalo Township's small volunteer fire departments as the fire service providers for Winfield Township.

Hartwig said he has tried for two years to improve operations at the fire department, to no avail. The decision was made by the supervisors and Hartwig after years of problems with the fire department and because their first responsibility is to ensure township residents receive the best possible fire protection.

The Winfield firefighters are welcome to join one of the three fire departments, but only if they comply with training standards and bylaws, Hartwig said.

Hartwig sent the supervisors in early May a letter to the fire department's board of directors informing them of their intentions to close the fire department.
