Lower-cost drug bill goes to governor

Legislation introduced by state Sen. Don White, R-41st, that would change drug regulations for the state Workers’ Compensation program, is headed to the desk of Gov. Tom Wolf.

The legislation, Senate Bill 935, cleared a vote by the state House of Representatives Monday. It had been approved by the state Senate last October.

The bill would require the state to adopt an evidence-based drug formulary for the Workers’ Compensation program.

White, in a news release Tuesday, said the bill will lower costs and provide better care for patients, as well as helping the state in its battle against the opioid epidemic.

White said the bill would also address ethical problems with the state’s current system, like some law firms purchasing their own pharmacies and referring workers’ compensation clients to doctors who send patients to those pharmacies.
