ELMIRA, N.Y. — Elijah Butler of Worthington recently was inducted into the Pi of New York chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at Elmira College.

Phi Beta Kappa, an academic honor society promotes, recognizes and honors scholarly achievement in the liberal arts and sciences.

BATON ROUGE, La. — Nakia Garver of Butler, was initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

She is studying for a degree in dietetics at Youngstown State University.

Phi Kappa Phi promotes academic excellence in all fields of higher education.

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — McKenna Cordier of Freeport and Brian Papich of Valencia received scholarships for the John Carroll University Boler School of Business for the current academic year.

Cordier received the Management, Marketing and Supply Chain Scholarship.

Papich received the Mark W. Pacelli Scholarship.

ALLIANCE, Ohio — Anna Wilson's work is on display until May 4 at the annual Student Art Exhibit at the Beeghly Hall Art Galleries of the University of Mount Union.

She is from Sarver.

JACKSON TWP — Tanya Gupta, a Seneca Valley Middle School eighth grade student, and Hiruni Herat, a Seneca Valley High School junior, received college scholarship awards and the honor of being named Carson Scholars.

Tanya and Hiruni will be honored at an awards banquet in April at Heinz Field.

The Pittsburgh chapter of the Carson Scholars Fund recognized Hiruni and Tanya for academic excellence and commitment to their community. All recipients have a minimum GPA of 3.75 and display humanitarian qualities through community service.

JACKSON TWP — Claire Williams, a Seneca Valley High School sophomore, recently won first place for her short story in the Fairchild Challenge at Phipps Conservatory.

Students were challenged to be a nature activist by creating a short story related to an environmental issue. Claire wrote about a place she had visited, the cenotes in the Yucatán Peninsula. Her story described the impacts of humans and tourism on these fragile, unique aquatic resources.

The competition offers creative challenges to secondary students to foster interest in the environment, to empower them to engage in civic life, and to encourage them to be energetic and knowledgeable members of their communities.

JACKSON TWP — The Seneca Valley Academic Decathlon Team placed third in the state among eighteen schools, and brought home a total of 25 medals in the Academic Decathlon State Competition at Clarion University.

Team medalists included sophomore Nishant Jayachadran who won an overall bronze and also medaled in the categories of essay, art, literature, speech and interview.

Junior student medalists included Rishin Sharma who won in economics, speech, interview, math and social science; Ryan Lipscomb who medaled in music and essay; Jessie Glatz who won in speech and interview; and Katie Parker who won in essay, art and literature.

Senior medalists included Nora Gavaghan who won in music, literature and science and Matthew Beggy who medaled in economics, science and essay.

The Seneca Valley Academic Decathlon State Team also included Rebekah Carlini, Ashley Conroy and Megan Neely.

The students competed for two days in 10 events.

Spencer Brackett, a sophomore from Butler who attends St. Joseph High School, received the Princeton Alumni Association of Western Pennsylvania Award at Carnegie Science Center's Covestro Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair.

His project was “Treatment of Tumor Hypoxia.”
