FINDLAY, Ohio — Samantha Bartley of Valencia and Alexis Foran of Freeport received endowed scholarships for the 2017-2018 school year at the University of Findlay.

Bartley received the TLB Foundation Christian Service Scholarship.

Foran received the Dow U.S.A. Science Scholarship.

MARS — Madison Ceasar, Symia Taimuty-Loomis and Audrey Gehm, all students in the Mars School District, received 2018 Northwest Region-at-Large Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

In the poetry category, Madison, a junior, earned a Gold Key for her piece, “Standards,” and a Silver Key for “2:47 a.m.” Symia, a freshman received an honorable mention for “My Jacket.”

In the novel-writing category, Audrey, an eighth-grader, received an honorable mention for her piece, “The Flight of an Eagle.”

All Gold Key winners’ works advance to the National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

Teams from Mars Middle School, Seneca Valley Middle School and Evans City Middle School participated in the recent 2018 MATHCOUNTS Midwestern Pennsylvania Chapter Regional Competition.

The MATHCOUNTS competition series requires outstanding math knowledge and problem-solving skills.

The team of Mars Middle School eighth-graders Timothy Jayamohan, Anuj Kaul, Audrey Milk and Luke Weiland earned second place overall.

In individual competition, Luke took first place and will advance to the 2018 Pennsylvania MathCounts Competition in March. Eighth-grader Raghav Kalbhor earned seventh place at the event.

Other Mars School District participants were eighth-graders Charles Biaku, Ava Black, Christopher Dvorak, Audrey Gehm, Nicholas Kaleida, Lauren Miko and RohanNarasimhan.

The Seneca Valley Middle School team of Rachel Spear, Chris Helmsen, Kason Kunkelmann and Tanya Gupta placed first overall.

Seneca Valley School District students in the top 10 individually were Rachel, second place; Chris, third place; Haihan Xu, fourth place; Peter Ko, fifth place; Kason, sixth place; Shanker Pillai, eighth place; Nathan Craig, ninth place; and Tanya, tenth place.

The Seneca Valley team and Haihan also qualified for the state competition in March.

MARS — Six Mars High School students who attend Butler County Area Vocational-Technical School placed in the 2018 SkillsUSA “Champions at Work” District 10 Competition at New Castle School of Trade.

Senior Abby Yankel, a cosmetology student, earned a Gold Medal in the action skills contest. Seniors Vanessa Morrow and Mia Morales, both cosmetology students, each received Gold Medals in the job skill demonstration open contest and job skill demonstration open (model) contest, respectively.

Senior Clay Merriman, an automotive technology I student, received a Silver Medal in the auto service technology contest; senior Jerome Nacey, a heavy equipment student, earned a Silver Medal in the diesel equipment technology contest; and senior Robert Samarin, a protective services student, received a Silver Medal in the fire fighting contest.

The students competed against high school students from other District 10 career and technical education centers. The SkillsUSA competition reinforces the field-related skills students learn in the classroom as well as their leadership prowess.

All Gold Medal winners will advance to the SkillsUSA Pennsylvania State Conference in Hershey.

MARS — Ian Nath and Bella Eagle, Mars High School students, were named finalists in the 2018 Photographer’s Forum Best of College and High School Photography contest.

Ian, a senior, was selected for a photo taken during Light Up Night in Pittsburgh and Bella, a sophomore, was chosen for a portrait of her sister.

The students’ works were selected from among more than 13,000 entries from the United States, Canada and other countries.

As finalists, their work will be included in the book “Best of College and High School Photography 2017.”
