10-year-old accidentally shoots his brother

State police say a 10-year-old boy accidentally shot his older brother with a handgun this afternoon at their home in Summit Township.

The bullet struck and went through the lower left leg of the 11-year-old, who was taken to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh, police said. The boy suffered no broken bones and he was to undergo surgery to remove any bullet fragments.

The boys were alone at their family's home on Moran Road about noon time when they reportedly heard a noise in the basement.

They retrieved a gun in one room and loaded it with ammunition they got from another room, police said. Moments later, the gun went off.

Police said the investigation continues and no decision has been made if charges would be filed.

“This should serve as a life lesson and learning lesson,” said Trooper Jessica Clouse, “to always secure your weapons within house.”
