Conto gets milestone as KC rolls

KNOX — Karns City head football coach Ed Conto has had a multitude of team success during his three decades on the sidelines.

On Friday night, he chalked up an individual milestone.

The Gremlins dominated Keystone from the opening kickoff, rolling to a 44-8 halftime lead en route to a 58-14 victory for win No. 200 of Conto’s illustrious career, a fact that he was unaware of until the end of the game.

“I didn’t even realize it,” Conto said, referring to his milestone victory. “The kids told me that at the end of the game.”

Conto’s humility didn’t stop there. He credited most of his success over the years to his coaching staff.

“I’ve had a great, consistent staff over the years,” Conto said. “We haven’t had much turnover. We have tried to build up the program, not just the team. They do such a great job that I can just leave them alone and let them do their thing.”

Dalton Beham led the way for the Gremlins on Friday, scoring three first-half touchdowns and racking up 129 yards on the ground before halftime.

He added one more touchdown in the second half, giving him 18 rushing touchdowns for the season.

“I wasn’t sure that Dalton (Beham) was even going to be a starter coming into the year,” Conto said. “But he has done a great job in the weight room. You have to give a lot of credit to the offensive line, too. They have done a great job.”

Karns City quarterback Anthony Kamenski threw for 142 yards in the first half as well, as the Gremlins out-gained the Panthers, 366-23, before halftime to invoke the Mercy Rule.

Kamenski finished with 150 yards passing.

Beham, who ended the game with 133 yards on just 10 carries, got things started for Karns City when he rumbled 55 yards for a score on the second play from scrimmage. The extra point was no good, but the Gremlins took a 6-0 lead.

Clay Garing, who rushed for 75 yards, scored on a 4-yard run early in the second quarter. He also was busy in the kicking game, making a 32-yard field goal and seven extra points.

Quarterback Nate Wingard and Corey Rapp connected on two touchdown passes for Keystone for their only scores of the game.

Conto thinks this team has the makings of a championship team.

“We had about one-third of the team that didn’t dress for tonight’s game,” Conto said. “We are trying to build up some depth and get better in the secondary. We have a ways to go still, but when we get everybody back, we should see a lot more improvement.”
