Buffalo Twp. man dies of suspected OD

2 possible OD victims revived

BUFFALO TWP — A 43-year-old man died Saturday of an apparent overdose at his home on Sarver Road, authorities said.

Buffalo Township police are investigating, but a report, including the man's name, was not available. An officer on duty declined to comment Saturday afternoon.

The man's wife found him unresponsive in the bedroom and notified authorities. Butler County Chief Deputy Coroner John Hanovick pronounced him dead at 11:58 a.m.

Police reportedly recovered a syringe and at least one empty stamp bag of suspected heroin at the scene.

An autopsy was planned Sunday. Hanovick said the cause of death, however, could not be determined until toxicology reports are completed, which could take several weeks.

Meanwhile, Butler police and emergency crews Friday night responded to two suspected overdoses.

In each case, the victim was given the opioid overdose reversal drug naloxone — better known by its brand name Narcan — and regained consciousness.

The first call came in at 8:14 p.m. for a 36-year-old man unconscious but breathing. The man was found in a bedroom at his home.

Authorities found suspected drug paraphernalia. The Butler Fire Department was first on scene and gave the man two doses of Narcan. He refused further treatment once he regained consciousness.

At 9:58 p.m., crews were called out to an apartment on the 200 block of Roosevelt Boulevard, where the tenant, a 22-year-old man, had overdosed, said Butler fire Capt. Kevin McAfee.

The man was found lying on the floor unconscious and barely breathing.

Butler firefighters administered one dose of Narcan and a Butler Ambulance Service crew provided him a second dose, McAfee said.

When the man came to, authorities said, he admitted using one-half bag of heroin. He declined hospital treatment.

Police are investigating but could not be reached for comment.
