Man guilty in 4 theft cases

Jonathan Shuler
He's admitted to treatment program

A Butler man was admitted into the drug treatment court after entering guilty pleas to four cases Tuesday.

Jonathan R. Shuler, 29, was placed in the program by county Judge William Shaffer, after pleading guilty to several theft and burglary charges in Butler County Court.

He was entered into the program on charges of felony criminal trespass and seven felony counts of theft. That plea agreement calls for 48 months probation, restitution and his participation in the drug treatment court.

If he is unsuccessful in completing the program, the pleas will be changed to two felony counts of burglary, which call for a sentence of 22 to 50 months in a state correctional facility.

He also pleaded guilty to misdemeanor criminal attempt to theft and summary harassment in two other cases and was sentenced to 36 months county probation to run concurrent with the drug treatment court supervision, a $100 fine, and 25 hours of community service.

The charges on which he was admitted to the drug treatment program stem from an incident on Dec. 25, 2016, in Clearfield Township. Police said Shuler broke into a garage in the 100 block of Criley Lane before fleeing into the woods. The victim reported hearing an all-terrain vehicle in the woods and shined a spotlight in that direction, and saw Shuler on the ATV, according to court documents.

Police noted that the victim knows Shuler and the property is “well lit.”

Later, police said, the homeowners discovered that missing from the garage were two guns — a Remington .30-06 pump-action rifle and a Mossberg 12-gauge slug gun. The firearms are valued at a combined $900.

During a previous interview with police investigating several other break-ins he allegedly committed in the area, Shuler admitted “that he could travel to and from burglary scenes on an ATV,” documents said.

He also was charged with crimes between March 17, 2016, and July 28, 2016, in Center, Summit and Oakland townships, where he admitted to breaking into several homes and businesses and stealing cash, change, keys, scrap metal, a safe and other items, valued at $13,085.

He was charged with the attempted theft count after an incident on Dec. 17, 2016, in Butler, when police said he attempted to gain entry to a cash register at the Kmart store at Pullman Square. The register, which was in the store's layaway section, had about $1,900 in it, police said.

While the suspect managed to get the machine open, he left empty-handed, according to court documents. A store surveillance camera captured the alleged crime on video.

The harassment charge stems from an incident on June 12, 2016, when police said he hit a woman, grabbed her by the wrist, stomped on her foot and pushed her.

He is being held in the Butler County Prison pending sentencing.
