John Garing

UNIVERSITY PARK — John Garing III of Chicora received a research fellowship with the Toshiba-Westinghouse Undergraduate Fellows Program at Penn State's University Park campus. A junior at Penn State University Park, he is one of 10 undergraduate students nationwide chosen to participate in the program.

As a research fellow, he will work with a faculty mentor investigating and researching topics within the nuclear field including reactor safety, reactor core analysis and radiation monitoring and instrumentation. He also will participate in technical and professional development seminars before presenting his final research results to Toshiba-Westinghouse executives at the end of the 10-week fellowship.

While double majoring in nuclear and mechanical engineering at Penn State, Garing serves as conference chair for the student chapter of the American Nuclear Society and is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

He is the son of John and Ann Marie Garing Jr of Chicora.

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — Amanda Alikhani of Mars was named a scholar athlete at John Carroll University. A student must earn a 3.25 GPA or higher during the 2016-17 academic year to receive the honor.

Alikhani is on the women's swim team and a junior at the university.

BEREA, Ohio — Brittany Huff of Harmony was nominated by faculty and staff to take part in Baldwin Wallace University's 123rd Annual White Rose Ceremony.

Huff, a graduate of Seneca Valley High School, will participate in recognition of her contribution to life at the university.

The White Rose Ceremony at commencement is in memory of Philura Gould Baldwin, granddaughter of the university's founder and the university's first librarian.

JACKSON TWP — Mark Kunkel, a Seneca Valley High School junior, was named one of the top 13 chemistry students in the Pittsburgh region.Kunkel was selected by Seneca Valley advanced placement chemistry teacher Kelly Weston to represent Seneca Valley High School for the regional competition hosted by the local chapter of the American Chemical Society.After earning a top 13 spot, Kunkel participated in the 49th Annual United States National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO) at Duquesne University.———SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock High School announced the Top Ten students in the senior class, as ranked by GPA. They were honored at a dinner at the Iron Bridge Restaurant in Mercer.The students are Mari Reott, Bailey Boyd, Arianna Wilson, Alyssa Stainer, Hannah Willison, Elena McDermott, Brooke Schaefers, Jeremy Pritts, Clayton McKinney and Daniel Williams.———NATRONA HEIGHTS — Saint Joseph High School students participated in the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science competition at the state level at Penn State University.Spencer Brackett, a freshman, received a perfect score. He is the son of Timothy and Karen Brackett and attends St. Christopher on the Lake Parish in Prospect.Ava Swanson, a freshman, received a perfect score. She is the daughter of Renae Swanson and attends St. Joseph Parish in Cabot.Thomas Preston, a sophomore, received a first-place award. He is the son of Michael and Donna Preston and attends St. Paul Parish in Butler.Julia Singleton, a sophomore, received a second- place award. She is the daughter of Christopher and Kristen Singleton and attends St. Paul Parish in Butler.Skylar Geibel, a freshman, received a third-place award. She is the daughter of Bruce and Melissa Geibel and attends St. Wendelin Parish in Butler.
