SRU announces Hall of Fame class

8 former Rock athletes will be inducted Sept. 24

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University has announced eight new inductees into the SRU Athletic Hall of Fame.

The inductions will take place at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 24 in the Robert M. Smith Student Center ballroom and the inductees will be recognized during The Rock's home football game with Gannon that night.

The Rock's 33rd induction class includes women's soccer player Sarah Arsenault (Class of 2006), women's basketball player Stacey (Green) McKavish (2005), baseball player Billy Gross (1993), wrestler Don Henry (1983), cross country athlete Eric Laughlin (1995), football player Jim Mill (1965), swimmer/water polo player Ryan Phillips (1999) and wrestling's Steve Roberts (1983).

Tickets for the induction ceremonies are $40 if purchased before Sept. 16. Tickets purchased on or after Sept. 16 are $50. No tickets will be available the day of the event. Call Tracy Allison at 724-738-2182 for ticket information.

Here is a synopsis of the 2016 inductees:

[naviga:h3]Sarah Arsenault[/naviga:h3]

A two-time PSAC Player of the Year, she holds the Rock women's soccer record for goals and points with 70 and 162. She played professionally for the Steel City Sparks of the Women's Premiere Soccer League.

Arsenault is now the head women's soccer coach at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi.

[naviga:h3]Billy Gross[/naviga:h3]

He started all 108 of his games as a catcher for SRU baseball. Gross led SRU to a 99-47 record, a PSAC championship and two NCAA Tournament berths. He hit .381 for his career with 68 runs, 11 homers and 88 RBI.

Gross is now vice president of commercial line sales and marketing for Hanover Insurance Group and lives in Norfolk, Mass.

[naviga:h3]Don Henry[/naviga:h3]

A four-year wrestler and two-time team captain, Henry was a three-time placer at the PSAC Championships and a two-time Division I national qualifier at 142 pounds.

Henry has been head wrestling coach at Gannon University since 1984 and has coached 32 All-Americans, 22 regional champions and 72 national qualifiers.

[naviga:h3]Stacey (Green) McKavish[/naviga:h3]

A two-time All-PSAC women's basketball player, she ranks third all-time in SRU rebounds with 938, fourth in blocked shots with 61 and seventh in scoring with 1,329 points. She also sank 75 three-pointers.

Green is now the manager of recruiting at Dewberry, an engineering firm in Fairfax, Va., and is married to former Rock football standout Ryan McKavish.

[naviga:h3]Eric Laughlin[/naviga:h3]

A six-time All-American and two-time PSAC champion, Laughlin is one of the most decorated distance runners in Rock history. He won PSAC titles in the 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters.

Laughlin is now the head women's cross country coach at Clarion University.

[naviga:h3]Jim Mill[/naviga:h3]

A first team All-PSAC lineman and Rock team captain in 1964, Mill won the Copley Award as SRU MVP that year. He was a two-way lineman.

Mill retired in 2002 after 30 years as a professor, coach and administrator at Indiana (Pa.) University.

[naviga:h3]Ryan Phillips[/naviga:h3]

A two-time All-American in water polo, Phillips was named National Player of the Year in 1998. He is the NCAA record holder for goals per game. He earned PSAC Rookie of the Year honors as a swimmer.

Phillips is now the director of national accounts for Xenex Disinfection Services in San Antonio, Texas.

[naviga:h3]Steve Roberts[/naviga:h3]

A two-time NCAA Division I East regional champion wrestler, Roberts was also a PSAC champion and compiled a 105-28-1 record at SRU. He served 16 years on the Rock coaching staff, including eight years as head coach.

Roberts also served as coordinator of recreational sports and outdoor adventure for 11 years before retiring in 2012. He stays active as an advisor to the SRU adventure club and cycling club.
