BlueSox enter break with win

Lemasters tosses gem in 4-2 Butler victory, gets team back to .500 in season's 2nd half

Unhappy with the location of his last offering, David Lemasters stalked to the back of the mound at Kelly Automotive Park, grabbed the rosin bag, gave it a squeeze, and dropped it back down to the turf.

The right-handed pitcher for Butler then unleashed a fastball that caught the outside corner for a strike.

The rosin bag is a touchstone for Lemasters, a necessary ritual that allows him to forget a poorly executed pitch and deliver a better one.

“I’d say the rosin bag is kind of like my comfort zone,” Lemasters said, smiling.

Lemasters certainly felt comfortable Sunday against his former team, Champion City.

The right-hander from Cortland, Ohio — a town 20 miles northwest of Sharon — scattered seven singles and struck out eight in seven strong innings to lead Butler to a 4-2 win over the Kings on Sunday night.

The BlueSox don’t return to action until Friday as the Prosopect League Al-Star Game is Wednesday night in Kokomo, Ind.

Lemasters pitched for Champion City last season. He made 16 appearances and three starts for the Kings and posted a 3.82 ERA.

When it came time for the Lake Erie College pitcher to pick a Prospect League team this season, Lemasters chose to play for Butler.

“(Champion City is) a great organization and I loved playing for them,” Lemasters said. “But this is closer to home. It was fun pitching against them.”

Lemasters has been solid for the BlueSox this season in his four starts.

He is now 2-1 with a 3.11 ERA and 22 strikeouts with only six walks in 26 innings pitched.

“Every night he comes out, he comes out and throws strikes,” said Butler manager Jason Radwan. “He gets ahead of guys and he has good stuff to go with it. That helps out a lot.”

Lemasters ran into trouble in the sixth inning and Champion City loaded the bases with one out, but after trips to the rosin bag, he got back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the inning.

Lemasters couldn’t escape the seventh unscathed, however, as back-to-back singles, an error, a sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout gave Champion City its only two runs of the game.

“I just want to help my team the best I can and help us get to the playoffs,” Lemasters said. “I just want to see this team succeed.”

Butler scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the third inning against Champion City starter Andrew McDonald with two outs.

Kristian Webb, who joined the BlueSox July 3, drove in two with a single and James Meeker, who came to the club Wednesday, roped a RBI double to key the big inning.

Webb, a catcher from Whitby, Ontario, and Meeker, a shortstop from Wexford, have only played 11 games between them, but have made a huge impact already.

Webb is batting .421 with four RBI and Meeker .474 with six RBI.

Both are left-handed hitters, which plays well at The KAP.

“Our latest pickups have been pretty good for us,” Radwan said. “Obviously they are in the middle of our order, so they have been going pretty well for us so far. Hopefully they can keep that going after the All-Star Break.

“They’re guys we uncovered later. We gave them some shots and they’ve thrived with it,” Radwan added.

Kyle Zurak struck out the side in the ninth for his sixth save for the BlueSox, who will have four days off before traveling to West Virginia to resume play Friday.

Butler heads into the break with two straight wins.

“It’s definitely good to get those two wins before four days off,” Radwan said. “Hopefully we can keep it going after those four days off.”
