Technology used to track stolen tablet

A Butler couple used technology to track down their stolen Apple iPad.

The computer tablet was taken April 16 from the owners' car in the 200 block of East Fulton Street.

The victims the following day realized technology was on their side and notified Butler police. They had a lead for investigators.

The device's built-in tracking software had zeroed in on a location, which one of the owners “pinged” to the 400 block of North McKean Street.

The victim then sent an alert tone to the iPad from his cell phone. The tone could be heard coming from an apartment. Police were familiar with the tenant, convicted thief 49-year-old Matthew P. Zulick, according to court documents.

Officers went to Zulick's apartment. He eventually let them inside and led them to the stolen iPad.

He initially claimed someone gave it to him several days earlier. But he later admitted that he broke a car window and took the device, valued at $350.

The damage to the car is estimated at $500.

Police last week charged Zulick with theft from a vehicle, receiving stolen property and criminal mischief.
