SRU helps students financially until state has budget

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University is spending $3 million to support 2,100 state students while there is no state budget.

Thousands of college students across the state depend on financial aid from the state, but they won’t get their money on time this year.

This is because the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency is not able to confirm awards or disburse funds for the 2015-16 academic school year until the state budget is passed, according to its website.

The Republican-controlled Legislature and Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf have yet to agree on a 2015-16 state budget.

At SRU, the administration decided to cover temporarily these grants out of its reserve funds to prevent students from being affected.

About one-third of SRU’s undergraduate state students receive some money from the university’s reserve fund, covering a total of $3.2 million for the fall semester, said Amanda Yale, SRU associate provost of financial services.

“The university is front-loading the money to students so there is no impact on students whatsoever,” Yale said.

Rita Abent, SRU executive director for public relations, said the university pulled the funds from its reserves, estimated at $35 million, which is use to pay for projects that have yet to be started. She said the procedure could delay some projects until the reserve returns to normal.
